Residency II
Middle School & High School
(K-5)
Residency is a year long placement in a school system to observe, learn, and teach art.
Here are some projects that I and, I do believe, the studnets, too, had fun doing.
I was placed at the middle school and high school, Cascade School, with Jo Jo Bills.
Middle School: 6-7th grade

Illuminated Letters
Illumination is the decorating of books or manuscripts with ornate lettering, icons and designs with luminous color and precious metals. During the Medieval Ages, literacy was rare, so dedicated scribes created illumination to guide the viewer through the document. It was their artistic goal to provide comprehension, beauty and honor to the pages they were writing because, in most instances, they believed they were copying the words of God. Thousands of examples have survived from Europe and the Middle East with stunning ornamental type and illustrative scenes.
After critiquing an illuminated page of the Book of Kells, Chi Rho, students gain an understanding of why, and how manuscripts were created in the Medieval Ages. Students created their own personal illuminated letter using symbols to represent themselves and decorative flourishes.
7th grade

Picasso and African Masks
1906 to 1909 was the period when Pablo Picasso painted in the style which was strongly influenced by African sculpture and particularly traditional African masks.
In most traditional African cultures the person who wears a ritual mask conceptually loses his or her human identity and turns into the sprit represented by the mask itself.
Students added 3-D form to a mask, which has a meaning or story behind it. Students had to use problem solving skill to personalize a unique mask using found objects.
6th grade

High School: 9-12 grade

Introduction to Clay Techniques
Studnets learned the basic techniques of handbuilding in clay - pinch, coil, and slab.
Students made "useful" items using one or more of the handbuilidng techniques. Students were given freedom to make personal -yet useful- objects.
Students had to choose to paint the projects with glaze or aycrlic paint.
Top to bottom:
-
A favorite book holder - Slab technique
-
A Kirby pencil holder - Pinch technique
-
An Oreo Cookie box - Slab and coil techniques
-
A black and white pyramid box - Slab technique

Comics: Line Techniques
With the exploration of comics and graphic novels, students applied their practiced skills of line technique for value and texture, and utilize the emotional qualities of line to create a unique story.
High School: Art 2
This lesson segment was the work use for my edTpa assignments.

Georgia O'Keeffe and Pastels
Students were introduced to Georgia O'Keeffe as an imporant femal artist in the 21st Centuryand her artworks - focusing on her flowers. Using this focal artist as inspiration, students created three flower drawings using techniques, such as, texture, overlapping, color, and shading/ value. Also, the different varieties of pastels (Oil, Stick, Chalk) were explored.
