Residency I
Elementry Art Classroom

(K-5)

Residency is a year long placement in a school system to observe, learn, and teach art.

Here are some projects that I and, I do believe, the studnets, too, had fun doing.

I was placed at the elementry school, Learning Way, August 2014- December 2014.

Pinwheels for Peace

Students designed pinwheels.

The students used symbols of peace to design their pinwheels.

On the Friday before International Peace Day, students placed their pinwheels at the enterance of the school.

God's Eyes - Ojo de Dios

Many of the students connected with this hispanic tradition.
I was very interested by the different ways students think. Some students understood right away, some with words, some by weaving upside down or on top, some by guiding their hands.

Special Needs

Learning Way is an inclusion school. Special needs students are in the classrooms. Art class really seems to be some of the special needs students' favorite class. With incouragement, these students learn and produce art.

Mehndi

Mehndi is painted on the skin with Henna  dye in the Middle East for celebration. It is painted on the hands and even feet for luck and prayer.

I taught a lesson where student got to explore the traditions of mehndi. They used lines and shape to design their hands (on paper) a celebration of their chose!

I really enjoied seeing their designs!
